Indian students need a Malaysia Student Pass to study in Malaysia, applied for by your university through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). The process costs around MYR 2,600 to 3,000 (about ₹61,000 to 70,500), and you’ll need both an eVAL and a Single Entry Visa before you fly.

What Is the Malaysia Student Visa?
The Malaysia student visa is officially called the Student Pass. You don’t apply to Malaysian immigration yourself; your university submits your application to EMGS once you accept an offer. You’ll come across three key terms.
- eVAL: The Electronic Visa Approval Letter from EMGS, confirming your application is approved
- SEV: The Single Entry Visa that Indian citizens need before boarding a flight to Malaysia
- Student Pass: The pass endorsed in your passport after you arrive and complete medical screening
Indian citizens can currently visit Malaysia visa-free for short trips, but this doesn’t cover study. You still need the eVAL and SEV.
Who Is Eligible for a Malaysia Student Visa?
- Offer letter: A confirmed offer for a full-time course at an approved Malaysian institution
- Passport: Valid for at least 18 months, ideally covering your full course
- English: Meeting your course’s English requirement, such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE
- Health: Passing medical screening after arrival
- Location: Applying while you’re outside Malaysia
Check that your course is listed on the Malaysian Qualifications Register before accepting an offer. What Documents Do Indian Students Need?

That comes to around MYR 2,600 to 3,000 in your first year, based on EMGS’s schedule of fees. Your university also collects a refundable personal bond of MYR 750 for Indian nationals, returned when you finish your course. The EMGS processing fee is non-refundable.

How Do Indian Students Apply for a Malaysia Student Visa?
Start at least two to three months before your course begins. Many students line this up with one of the main intakes in Malaysia in February, July or September.
- Accept your offer. Your university’s international office starts your visa application.
- Send your documents. Your university submits them to EMGS and you pay the fees.
- Receive your eVAL. EMGS aims for 14 working days on a complete application; track progress on the EMGS website.
- Apply for your SEV. Apply online through the Malaysian eVisa portal or at a Malaysian mission in India.
- Complete your arrival card. Submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before you travel.
- Travel to Malaysia. If you land at KLIA, report to the International Student Arrival Centre.
- Complete medical screening. Attend an EMGS-approved clinic within 7 days of arrival.
- Get your Student Pass. Your university submits your passport to Immigration for endorsement and your i-Kad.
What Happens After You Arrive in Malaysia?
- At the airport: Carry printed copies of your eVAL, SEV, offer letter and passport
- Medical screening: Usually blood tests, a chest X-ray and a general check-up
- Before your pass is issued: Avoid travelling outside Malaysia while your passport is with Immigration
- Renewals: Your Student Pass is usually renewed each year through your university, at a much lower cost than the first-year fees
Can You Work or Stay On After Graduation?
- Part-time work: Up to 20 hours a week, but only during semester breaks or holidays longer than 7 days, in approved sectors such as restaurants, mini markets and hotels, and with Immigration approval
- Graduate Pass: A 12-month Graduate Pass lets degree graduates stay to look for work. Indian eligibility is currently confirmed until 31st December 2026, so check its status before you graduate
- Employment Pass: Long-term work needs an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, with a minimum basic salary of RM5,000 a month since 1st June 2026

- Working during term time: Part-time work is only allowed during breaks, with approval
