St George’s, University of London Upcoming Taster Lectures

St George’s is the UK’s specialist health university and has been improving health for over 250 years. We are uniquely positioned as a leading expert in health education and have an outstanding record of research and innovation; our alumni include Edward Jenner, pioneer of the smallpox vaccine, and recent research has focused on tackling Covid-19.

St George’s, University of London will be hosting taster lectures over the next month, for aspiring Pharmacology and Biomedical Science students.

BSc Clinical Pharmacology – How clinical pharmacology transformed HIV infection from death sentence to liveable condition

16th November, 12 – 1 pm ET

In this taster lecture you will look back in time to the 1980s, when the first people in the UK were diagnosed with HIV and AIDS, and the diagnosis was effectively a death sentence. You will learn how treatments for HIV infection were discovered and developed and how, with today’s array of ‘anti-retroviral’ medicines, people with HIV can have a normal life expectancy. We will finish by reflecting on inequalities in access to HIV medicines around the world and how where you live affects your chances of beating HIV disease.

MSci Biomedical Science –  How Science Works

23rd November, 12 – 1 pm ET

The Biomedical Science MSci degree places a strong emphasis on the development of critical thinking and scientific skills. This lecture, taken from the third-year Biomedical Research Techniques for Drug Development module, provides a light-hearted, yet accurate introduction to how scientific research is carried out in both university labs and the pharmaceutical sector.

BSc Biomedical Science  – Poisoning and Overdose

7th December, 12 – 1 pm ET

This lecture provides an insight into what drug-induced asphyxia tells us about the physiology of the respiratory system.
