Studying in Wales gives international students internationally ranked universities, lower living costs than London and many large English cities, and campuses close to the coastline, mountains, and national parks. Cardiff University, Wales’s highest-ranked university, is 179th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and the country’s only Russell Group member. Graduates can stay and work through the UK Graduate Route.

Wales has eight universities; they are Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Cardiff Metropolitan, Swansea, the University of South Wales, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and Wrexham. This guide covers rankings, costs, scholarships, and work rights for international students considering studying in Wales.

Why Study in Wales as an International Student?

  • Research strength, with 90% of Cardiff University’s research rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021
  • Lower living costs than London and many large English cities, especially for rent
  • Three-year undergraduate degrees and one-year master’s programmes, as in England
  • Courses taught in English, with no need to speak Welsh
  • Coastal and countryside campuses, including Swansea’s beachfront Bay Campus
  • Access to the UK Graduate Route after you finish your degree

Overall rankings only tell part of the story. Several Welsh universities rank strongly for individual subjects. For example, Cardiff is highly ranked for Dentistry and for Communication and Media Studies, so compare subject rankings for your course. See the full UK university rankings for more.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Wales in 2027?

International tuition fees in Wales vary by university and course, and they are often lower than at comparable universities in England. Figures below were correct as of October 2026.

Cost Typical Amount (GBP)
Undergraduate tuition Around £15,000 to £30,000 per year, and higher for medicine and dentistry
Postgraduate taught tuition Around £16,000 to £30,000, and higher for MBAs
Visa maintenance requirement £1,203 per month, up to £10,827 for nine months
Student visa fee £558
Immigration Health Surcharge £776 per year of visa

The maintenance figure is the official minimum for visa applications made on or after 30th November 2026. Rent in Cardiff, Swansea, and smaller university towns is generally lower than in London and many large English cities, which makes a real difference over a three-year degree. Students and parents should also budget for flights, accommodation deposits, and English tests. See StudyIn’s guide to student living costs in the UK for more detail.

Expert View

“When you compare Wales with England, put subject ranking and total cost side by side rather than looking at overall rankings alone. A course ranked highly for your subject in a lower-cost Welsh city can give you a stronger return than a similar course in a more expensive one.” – Rahul Chauhan, Counsellor, StudyIn.

Scholarships for International Students in Wales

Most Welsh universities offer their own international scholarships. These are usually merit-based tuition fee reductions ranging from around £1,000 to £10,000, depending on the university, course, and your grades. Popular subject areas for funding include Business, Computer Science, and Engineering.

National schemes that international students can use in Wales include:

  • Chevening Scholarships: The UK government’s scholarship for one-year master’s degrees, covering tuition, living costs, and flights for eligible applicants with work experience
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Funding for master’s and PhD study for citizens of eligible Commonwealth countries

Eligibility, values, and deadlines vary, so check each official page early. A StudyIn counsellor can match your profile to scholarships at Welsh universities.

How Do You Apply to Universities in Wales?

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with the same deadlines as the rest of the UK: 15th October 2026 for medicine and dentistry, and 13th January 2027 for most other courses.

Postgraduate applications are made directly to each university, usually on a rolling basis. Most courses start in September, and some offer January intakes. See the full list of UK university application deadlines.

Can You Work in Wales During and After Your Studies?

International students on a degree-level course can usually work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacations. After graduating, the Graduate Route lets you stay and work, or look for work, anywhere in the UK. From January 2027, it lasts 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates and three years for PhD graduates.

Wales has growing sectors in compound semiconductors, life sciences, creative industries, financial services, and renewable energy. Full visa requirements are covered in StudyIn’s guide to UK Student visa requirements.

What Is Life Like for International Students in Wales?

Cardiff, the capital, is a compact, lively city with a strong sports, music, and cultural scene, and it’s about two hours from London by train. Swansea combines city life with beaches and the Gower Peninsula. Aberystwyth, Bangor, and Wrexham offer smaller, close-knit communities near the coast, mountains, and national parks.

Wales has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd, Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, and the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales.

Welsh is spoken alongside English, and you’ll see bilingual signs everywhere, but English is the everyday language for study and work. Welsh universities offer dedicated international student support, from visa advice to accommodation help.
