What English Score Does a Student Visa Require in 2027?

Home Affairs does not apply one universal English score to every Student visa applicant. Whether you need to provide English evidence depends on your Student visa circumstances and Document Checklist.

If a test is required, the minimum depends on the approved test and whether your principal course is packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, an eligible pathway programme, or at least 20 weeks of ELICOS.

The Subclass 500 requirements use these minimum overall scores:

Student Visa English Score vs Competent English

Do not confuse the Subclass 500 English requirements with the separate Competent English standard. Competent English uses minimum scores for each test component, for example IELTS 6 in every component, whereas the Student visa table above uses overall scores. The applicable Student visa score can also be lower when qualifying ELICOS or pathway arrangements apply.

What English Score Do Universities Require?

There is no single English score for Australian university admission. Your university sets its own requirements, and these can vary by course, faculty and level of study. A score that meets one university’s entry requirement may not be enough for another.

For example, the Australian National University (ANU) generally requires IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, although individual programmes may have additional requirements. Griffith University similarly lists IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with no sub-score below 6.0, for standard entry, while noting that some degrees require higher English proficiency or specific tests.

IELTS or PTE: Which to Take?

Neither IELTS nor PTE is automatically the better choice. Your decision should come down to which test your shortlisted universities accept and which format suits you best.

University score requirements are set independently, so a visa threshold should not be used as your target admission score. Before booking, compare the accepted tests and minimum scores for every course you plan to apply to.

Can You Study in Australia Without IELTS?
