Australian Universities Strengthen Their Global Standing in QS World University Rankings 2027

23 July 2026

The QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June 2026, place 13 Australian universities among the world’s top 200, amongst them The Australian National University (29th), RMIT University (119th), Macquarie University (126th) and the University of Wollongong (195th), all StudyIn partner institutions.

For Indian students planning to study in Australia, the rankings provide an internationally recognised benchmark for comparing universities. With more than 1,500 institutions evaluated worldwide, they offer a valuable starting point when shortlisting universities alongside course quality, career prospects and student experience.

Three of these universities have officially improved their global standing this year.

  • The Australian National University climbed three places to 29th, placing it among the world’s top 2% of universities while improving its performance in areas including sustainability and employer reputation.
  • RMIT University rose to 119th, which is its highest QS ranking in 20 years, supported by stronger scores for international research reputation and citations per faculty.
  • Macquarie University reached its highest-ever position of 126th, climbing 12 places following consistent progress over the past decade.
  • The University of Wollongong also remains among the world’s top 200 universities, ranking 195th, with recognised strengths in research citations and sustainability.

For Indian students, a strong QS ranking reflects a university’s global reputation, research performance, employer recognition and international outlook. However, rankings should be considered alongside factors such as course accreditation, graduate employment outcomes, scholarships, tuition fees and campus location to make an informed study abroad decision.
