No country guarantees permanent residence, but the most structured PR pathway for Bangladeshi students currently runs through Canada, where a Post-Graduation Work Permit leads into Express Entry.
Australia offers points-tested and employer-sponsored routes that depend heavily on your occupation, age and English score, while the UK has the shortest post-study work visa and a settlement system under review.
This guide compares all three so you can judge which pathway realistically fits your course, budget and plans.
What Is the Difference Between PR, Settlement and a Post-Study Work Visa?
- A post-study work visa is temporary. Examples are the UK Graduate Route, Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Australia’s Temporary Graduate visa.
- Permanent residence (PR) is the right to live and work in a country indefinitely. Canada and Australia both use this term.
- Settlement is the UK’s equivalent, known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
In every country below, you must move from the temporary post-study visa onto a separate PR or settlement route, and each has its own requirements.

What Is the UK Pathway to Settlement for Bangladeshi Students?
The UK route has three stages: a Student visa, the Graduate Route, then a Skilled Worker visa that can lead to ILR. Since July 2025, Skilled Worker jobs must be graduate level (RQF 6) and pay at least £41,700 or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. A lower new-entrant salary rate can apply when you first switch from the Graduate Route, but it doesn’t apply at the ILR stage.
ILR currently takes five years on the Skilled Worker route, and time spent as a student or on the Graduate Route doesn’t count towards it. Two changes matter most right now.
- Confirmed: The Graduate Route falls to 18 months for applications from 1st January 2027, and B2 English becomes a settlement requirement from 26th March 2027.
- Proposed, not yet law: A 10-year ILR baseline under “earned settlement”, with faster routes for higher earners. The five-year route remains in force as of the end of September 2026.
Many Bangladeshi families, particularly in Sylhet, have long-standing links with the UK, but family ties don’t change the visa or settlement rules that apply to you.

What Is the Canada Pathway to PR for Bangladeshi Students?
Canada’s route is the most clearly mapped. You study at a PGWP-eligible institution, receive a PGWP, gain 12 months of skilled Canadian work experience, then apply through Express Entry’s Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or a provincial nominee programme (PNP).
The CEC needs one year of skilled work (TEER 0 to 3 jobs) within the last three years, and experience gained while studying full-time doesn’t count. You’ll also need an approved language test, such as IELTS General Training or CELPIP, at CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs or CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. Your ranking depends on your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and CEC draws in 2026 have mostly needed scores above 500.
A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, and 2026 category-based draws favour areas such as healthcare, STEM, trades, education and French-language ability.

What Is the Australia Pathway to PR for Bangladeshi Students?
Australia’s route starts with the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which is a bridge rather than PR. Most graduates then aim for a points-tested visa: Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) or Skilled Work Regional (491), which leads to PR through the subclass 191 visa after three years of regional conditions. The alternative is employer sponsorship through the Skills in Demand visa (482), which can lead to the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (186).
You need at least 65 points to enter the pool, but invitations in practice often need considerably more. Points come from age, English, qualifications, work experience and state nomination, and they fall after age 32. Your occupation must also be on the relevant skilled occupation list, with a positive skills assessment.

Expert View
“Students often pick a country for its PR headlines, then choose a course that doesn’t match any in-demand occupation. Your course choice and English score will shape your settlement chances far more than the country’s reputation.” – Sabrina Mahbub, Country Manager, StudyIn – Bangladesh.

What Does the Post-Study Stage Cost?
Your budget needs to cover the post-study visa as well as your degree, and this is often missing from cost estimates. These fees come on top of tuition, living costs and proof of funds.
| Destination |
Post-Study Visa Cost |

Conversions are approximate, based on October 2026 exchange rates, and will change. PR applications carry further fees later, so check each government’s current fee list before you plan.
What Affects Your Chances of Getting PR as a Bangladeshi Student?
- Course and occupation: PR routes are tied to skilled occupations, so subjects such as engineering, data science, healthcare and finance can align better than others.
- Age: Australian points fall after age 32, the 485 has a 35-year age limit, and Canada’s CRS awards fewer age points as you get older.
- English scores: Higher scores add points in Canada and Australia, and B2 English will be required for UK settlement from 26th March 2027. Around 70% of Bangladeshi students don’t reach their target score first time, so plan for retakes.
- Work experience: Skilled experience can add points in both Canada and Australia, which is useful if you’re a postgraduate applicant who has already worked.
- Policy risk: All three countries have tightened rules recently, so treat PR as a possible outcome, not a promise.
Which Country Has the Best PR Pathway for Bangladeshi Students?
Canada has the most clearly defined route from study to PR, but it’s competitive and rules have changed often. Australia can work well if your occupation is in demand, while the UK offers the shortest post-study window and the most uncertainty on settlement. Which one suits you depends on your profile.
- Canada suits students on a PGWP-eligible programme who expect a skilled role and can achieve strong language scores.
- Australia suits students in occupations on the skilled lists, aged 35 or under, who are open to regional study and living.
- The UK suits students who expect to secure a graduate-level sponsored job above the salary threshold and can accept that settlement rules may change.
Choosing a destination for its PR pathway only works if your course, English score and budget line up first. StudyIn Bangladesh’s counsellors can check your eligibility, shortlist courses linked to in-demand occupations, and support you through English requirements, applications, financial evidence and visa preparation. Your first counselling session is free, so you can compare all three countries with your own profile in front of you.
FAQs
Which country is best for PR after study for Bangladeshi students?
No country guarantees PR. Canada has the most structured route through the PGWP and Express Entry, Australia relies on points-tested and employer routes tied to your occupation, and the UK currently offers settlement after five years on a Skilled Worker visa, with a 10-year baseline proposed.
Can Bangladeshi students get PR in Canada after studying?
It’s possible but not guaranteed. Most graduates get a PGWP, gain 12 months of skilled work, then apply through Express Entry or a provincial nominee programme, where competitive CRS scores apply.
Can I get PR in Australia after my master’s degree?
Possibly. Most graduates move from the Temporary Graduate visa to a points-tested or employer-sponsored visa, which depends on your occupation, points score, age, English and state nomination.
How long does it take to settle in the UK after a master’s degree?
Time as a student or on the Graduate Route doesn’t count towards ILR. If you move to a Skilled Worker visa, ILR currently takes five years, although a 10-year baseline has been proposed and isn’t yet law.
What is the difference between a post-study work visa and PR?
A post-study work visa is temporary and lets you work after graduating. PR or settlement is permanent status that you must apply for separately.
Can my spouse come with me while I study?
It depends on the country and your course. Taught master’s students in the UK generally can’t bring dependants, Canada allows a spouse to accompany you but limits spousal work permits to certain programmes, and Australia’s rules are changing, so check before you apply.
