You can study abroad from Bangladesh after HSC in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Malaysia, but whether you can start a bachelor’s degree directly or need a foundation year depends on the university, your HSC GPA and your subject.
Malaysia is the most affordable of the five, while the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand cost more but offer post-study work routes that Malaysia doesn’t currently extend to Bangladeshi graduates.
This guide compares entry routes, costs, work rights and post-study options so students and parents can decide together.
Can You Study Abroad Directly After HSC?
Yes, but not always straight into a bachelor’s degree. Universities abroad generally recognise HSC as 12 years of schooling, yet they don’t treat it as equivalent to A Levels, so the route depends on the university, your GPA and your chosen course. SSC alone isn’t enough for a bachelor’s degree.
- Direct entry: Some universities accept a strong HSC result for Year 1, often with subject prerequisites such as mathematics for engineering and computing
- Foundation or diploma: Many universities ask for a foundation year or diploma first, which adds time and cost but often comes bundled with a bachelor’s offer
- A Levels or prior study: Students with A Levels, or a year of recognised university study, may qualify for direct entry more easily
What Are the HSC Entry Routes in Each Destination?
| Destination |
Entry Route After HSC |

IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, varies by course |
3 years (4 in Scotland) |
| Australia |
Direct entry at selected universities, otherwise a foundation or diploma that can lead into the degree |
IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, varies by course |
3 years |
| Canada |
Many universities consider HSC for direct entry, with criteria that vary by course, while some require a foundation year |
IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, varies by course |
3 to 4 years |
| New Zealand |
HSC with a high GPA at some universities, otherwise an international foundation year |
IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, varies by course |
3 years |
| Malaysia |
Direct entry at many private universities, with minimum GPAs that vary by course, otherwise a foundation or diploma |
IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, and some accept MOI or internal tests |
3 to 4 years |
Minimum GPAs differ sharply by course. For example, Curtin University Malaysia has listed HSC GPA 4.0 for business degrees and 4.8 for engineering and computing, so check each university’s own requirement before you shortlist. See Malaysian universities and branch campuses for options.
English is the step many students underestimate. Our Bangladesh team estimates that around 70% of Bangladeshi students don’t reach their target IELTS or PTE score on the first attempt, so plan for a retake. Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter, and you can read how UK entry without IELTS works, or look at English test preparation for Malaysia.
How Much Does It Cost to Study Abroad After HSC?
The full commitment goes beyond tuition. Families should add living costs, visa fees and the money that must be shown for the visa, and a foundation year adds another year of fees.

No single published figure for Bangladeshi applicants, so confirm with your university |
RM 2,500 to 4,000 in first-year pass costs (~BDT 75,000 to 1.2 lakh) |
Tuition ranges are indicative, and fees vary by university and course. Funds shown for the visa usually need to have been held for a set period, and the UK, for example, expects 28 days, so families should plan early. For a side-by-side view, see which destination is cheapest for Bangladeshi students, and check the official Immigration New Zealand student visa page for current New Zealand requirements.
Costs are shown in local currency with approximate BDT conversions, based on October 2026 exchange rates (£1 is about BDT 152, AUD 1 about 86, CAD 1 about 89, NZD 1 about 70 and RM1 about 30). They will change, so use them for planning only.
Expert View
“Many families pick a destination first and check the HSC entry route later. Confirm whether your HSC result is accepted for direct entry before you shortlist, because a foundation year adds a year of cost.” – Sabrina Mahbub, Country Manager, StudyIn – Bangladesh.
Can You Work Part-Time and Stay After Graduating?
Part-time work can ease living costs, but it shouldn’t be counted on to meet visa funds. What happens after graduation also differs sharply between the five destinations.
| Destination |
Part-Time Work |
Post-Study Work Route |
| United Kingdom |
Up to 20 hours per week in term-time, full-time in holidays |
Graduate Route of 18 months for non-PhD graduates applying from 1st January 2027 |
| Australia |
Up to 48 hours per fortnight in term |
Temporary Graduate visa, typically 2 years after a bachelor’s degree |
| Canada |
Allowed within current hour limits, so confirm when you apply |
Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to 3 years, depending on programme length |
| New Zealand |
Up to 25 hours per week in term-time since 3rd November 2025 |
Post Study Work Visa of up to 3 years, depending on qualification |
| Malaysia |
Up to 20 hours per week, only in semester breaks, in limited sectors, with prior approval |
No Graduate Pass for Bangladeshi nationals at present, so an employer-sponsored Employment Pass is needed |
A post-study work visa doesn’t guarantee permanent residence, and each country has its own separate route. Malaysia’s 12-month Graduate Pass isn’t open to Bangladeshi graduates, because Bangladesh isn’t on the official EMGS list of eligible nationalities, and that list has changed before. New Zealand’s post-study visa length depends on your qualification, so confirm it with Immigration New Zealand.
What Should Parents Check Before Choosing a Destination?
For undergraduate study, families are usually funding the degree, so these questions matter as much as the ranking of the university.
- Total cost: Price the full course, including any foundation year, living costs and visa funds, not just year-one tuition
- Safety and location: All five destinations are popular with international students, but safety and living costs vary by city, so compare the specific campus area
- Accommodation: Ask whether first-year university accommodation is available and what it costs
- Reputation and return: A well-known name matters to many families, but weigh it against cost and the post-study options above
- Visa readiness: Each country assesses finances and study intent closely, and Australia applies the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Check the UK student visa requirements, Australian student visa requirements and Canada study permit requirements early, along with the official GOV.UK Student visa page
How Do You Choose the Right Destination After HSC?
Malaysia suits families whose main limit is budget, while the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand suit those who can fund a higher cost and want a post-study work route. Many families in Sylhet look first at the UK because of family links there, and many students in Barishal now consider Canada and Australia, but a connection shouldn’t replace checking entry, cost and course fit. Read why Bangladeshi students choose the UK, Australia and Canada before you decide.
- Check your HSC result and subject prerequisites against your target course
- Set a total budget for the full course and compare destinations against it
- Confirm whether you can enter directly or need a foundation year
- Plan IELTS or PTE, including time for a retake
- Check the funds to show and visa requirements for each destination
- Speak to a counsellor to shortlist courses that fit all five points
How Can StudyIn Help You After HSC?
Choosing a destination, course and entry route at the same time is hard to do alone, especially when each university reads HSC differently.
StudyIn counsellors can check your HSC result against each university’s entry route, shortlist courses that fit your budget, and support you through English requirements, applications, financial evidence and visa preparation. Your first counselling session is free, so you and your family can compare options together.

Malaysia is usually the cheapest of the five, with undergraduate tuition of about RM 20,000 to RM 50,000 per year, compared with higher tuition in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Do I need IELTS to study abroad after HSC?
Most universities ask for IELTS or PTE. Some accept a Medium of Instruction letter or an internal English test, particularly in Malaysia, but requirements vary by university and course.
