Overview

The University of Targu Mures Medical Campus Hamburg (UMCH) is a private medical branch campus located in Hamburg, Germany. Opened in 2019, UMCH allows international students to complete a six-year European medical degree entirely in English without requiring initial German language skills for admission.

The university accommodates a growing international student community representing over 50 different countries. The academic framework divides the six-year human medicine programme into two main phases. Students spend their first two years completing foundational pre-clinical studies at the specialised Hamburg campus. From the third year onwards, the focus transitions to practical clinical rotations across an extensive network of over 30 certified teaching hospitals throughout Germany.

The campus features modern learning environments designed to facilitate interactive medical training. Facilities include high-definition multimedia lecture halls, science laboratories, and an advanced 3D virtual anatomy dissection table. To maintain teaching quality, lectures and practical sessions are conducted in small groups, ensuring direct feedback and guidance from academic tutors.

Graduates receive a fully accredited medical qualification that meets European Union standards, making them eligible to apply for a medical licence and pursue clinical careers internationally, including within the UK and the USA.

Services

UMCH offers dedicated services to support international students during their academic journey and transition to living in Germany. The campus management hosts organised welcome events, known as Welcome Days, to help new students settle into the campus, navigate administrative requirements, and meet their peers.

Because the clinical rotations from the third year require direct communication with patients in German hospitals, the university integrates structured German language classes into the curriculum from the early semesters. This specialised training helps students achieve the necessary language proficiency for their practical hospital placements.

  • German Recognition: The institution holds an official "H+" status within the central German Anabin database, signifying full recognition of its academic degrees under German higher education laws.
  • Global Portability: The medical degree is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, ensuring eligibility for international licensing pathways such as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
