Overview
FHM University is a state-recognised private university of applied sciences, founded in Bielefeld in 2000. Its teaching model combines academic study with practical experience and close links to professional life, reflecting its focus on SMEs.
FHM offers bachelor’s and master’s programmes across Business, Psychology, Education & Social Sciences, Media & Communication, Technology, and Sport & Health. It has nine campuses across Germany, alongside the FHM Online-University, with Berlin highlighted as a key location for international degree programmes. FHM’s international portfolio also includes preparatory programmes for international applicants.
Services
FHM’s International Student Advisory Service provides personalised guidance on programme selection, applications, required documents, motivation letters, language tests and interviews.
International students can also receive information and support for preparing to study in Germany, including orientation events, language courses, cultural and academic adaptation seminars, visa matters, accommodation and everyday life. FHM’s Welcome Centres offer consultations in English, German and Chinese, with centres in India, China and Korea.
The university also provides access to an international network, with opportunities including cultural activities, workshops, company visits and internships.
Rankings
FHM has been recognised as Germany’s best business school in the Deutschland Test study, with the university reporting a five-year run at the top of its category. The 2025/early-2026 study covered 34,164 responses across 266 providers.
For distance learning, FHM highlights its 7th-place result in the FernstudiumCheck Award 2025. FHM is not listed among the headline winners of the 2026 FernstudiumCheck ranking.
Accommodation
FHM does not operate a single university-wide student residence system across its campuses. However, its international student services provide guidance on accommodation options and living in Germany, alongside information on practical matters such as residence permits.
Location
FHM has nine physical campuses in Bielefeld, Bamberg, Berlin, Düren, Frechen (bei Köln), Hannover, Köln, Rostock and Waldshut, alongside the FHM Online-University. FHM describes its campuses as generally centrally located with good public-transport connections.
Bielefeld is the university’s largest campus and headquarters, while Berlin is specifically highlighted for international degree programmes. Individual campuses have different academic specialisms, allowing students to choose a location based on their preferred field of study.
