Overview

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a world-renowned "University of Excellence" and one of the largest research and educational institutions in Germany.

Formed by the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Research Centre, it represents a unique combination of a state university and a national laboratory. KIT is a member of the prestigious TU9 and hosts over 22,000 students, with roughly 20 per cent coming from abroad. The university is a global leader in engineering, natural sciences, and computer science. Its facilities are vast, spanning several campuses with state-of-the-art research centres that collaborate with global industry giants.

Services

The International Students Office (IStO) at KIT is the central hub for all non-German students, offering specialised support from the pre-arrival phase. The university provides an extensive "Orientation Week" and a "Buddy Programme" where local students mentor international newcomers.

Language support is exceptional, with the KIT Language Centre offering German courses from A1 to C2, as well as specialised technical German modules. Students can join over 80 university groups, including the international "AK Erasmus" and various sports clubs. For those entering the job market, the KIT Career Service provides workshops and hosts one of the largest career fairs in Germany.

Rankings

KIT consistently ranks among the top technical universities globally.

In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, it received high scores for its research environment and industry income. The university also maintains a top-tier position in the 2024 CHE Ranking for its IT and mechanical engineering programmes.

Accommodation

Housing in Karlsruhe is managed largely by the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe, which operates more than 20 residential halls. While housing is not guaranteed due to high demand, international students are given a high priority in the application process.

Notable residences include the Hans-Dickmann-Kolleg (HaDiKo), Germany's largest self-administered student dormitory. Rental prices in state-run halls are very affordable, typically ranging from €250 to €400 per month. The university also provides a private accommodation database to help students find rooms in the city's lively Weststadt and Oststadt districts.
