IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo for Filipino students comes down to one question: where will your score be used? IELTS and PTE Academic are the safest choices because universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Spain accept them, and the UK and Australian visa systems recognise them.

Duolingo costs far less, but it only works where your university accepts it and you don’t need a visa-approved test. English is rarely the barrier for students from the Philippines, so the real decisions are about cost, acceptance and whether a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter can replace a test.

Fees are for the Philippines in late 2026, and peso figures are approximate and based on exchange rates at the time of writing. Duolingo costs less than a third of IELTS or PTE, which is why many families ask about it first. Scores from all three are generally valid for two years.

In the UK, a Secure English Language Test (SELT) is generally needed for the student visa. For degree-level courses, some universities assess English themselves, so confirm what yours will accept. Australia only accepts tests taken at a secure test centre, so at-home tests, including Duolingo, IELTS Online and TOEFL iBT Home Edition, generally aren’t accepted for visas even where a university accepts them for admission.

New Zealand providers set their own requirements, and Immigration New Zealand doesn’t apply one fixed score. Most English-taught programmes in Spain ask for roughly B2 level, commonly IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, while Spanish-taught programmes need a Spanish test such as DELE or SIELE instead. Practice resources are available through language prep for the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

“The most expensive English test is the one you have to take twice because it wasn’t accepted. Ask each university in writing what it accepts, and for the UK and Australia check the visa rules separately, since admission and visa requirements can differ.” – Joanna Alejandro, Country Manager, StudyIn – Philippines.

Can Filipino Students Use an MOI Certificate Instead of an English Test?

A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter confirms that your previous education was taught in English. Because most Philippine schools teach in English, many students and parents hope to skip the test, and some universities do accept an MOI. Policies vary by university and course, so treat it as a possibility to confirm rather than a rule.
