The UK’s January intake lets Nepali students start a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the same academic year, with the same qualifications and post-study work rights as September starters. If you missed September, are still waiting on NEB Grade 12 or bachelor’s results, or need a few more months to arrange your NOC, funds, and English test, January 2027 is a realistic route into a UK university.

This guide covers which UK universities offer a January intake for Nepali students, what it costs in NPR, the Nepal-specific steps (NOC, TB test, and VFS Global Kathmandu), and the deadlines that matter most.

What Is the January Intake in the UK?

UK universities admit international students at three points in the year. September is the main intake, January is the second largest, and May is much smaller. January covers a wide range of foundation, undergraduate, and especially postgraduate courses, although not every course offered in September has a January start.

Intake

Classes Start

When Most Students Apply

Best For

September

Mid to late September

Autumn of the previous year to summer

The widest choice of courses

January

Mid to late January

Spring to November of the previous year

Students who missed September or need more preparation time

May

May

Autumn to early spring

A small number of postgraduate and foundation courses

Why Should Nepali Students Choose the January Intake?

Nepali students often choose January to retake IELTS or PTE, wait for final results, or simply give themselves time to prepare a stronger application. There are also some practical advantages worth weighing up.

More Time to Prepare Your Documents

A January start gives you breathing space to collect your NEB Grade 12 or bachelor’s transcripts, get an equivalency certificate if you studied under a non-NEB board such as A-levels, write a sharper personal statement, and build up the funds you’ll need to show for your visa.

Less Competition for Places

Fewer students apply for January than September, so a well-prepared Nepali applicant can stand out more easily, and smaller cohorts often mean a more personal learning experience.

Scholarships With January Deadlines

Several universities run scholarships open to January starters. Amounts and deadlines change every cycle, so always confirm the current terms on the university’s own website before you apply.

Post-Study Work Timing

A one-year master’s starting in January 2027 usually finishes in early 2028, so you’ll apply for the Graduate Route under the new rules. From January 2027, the Graduate visa lasts 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates (PhD graduates keep three years), giving you time to look for work in the UK after your course.

Plan Around Dashain and Tihar

The busiest stretch of a January application, from accepting your offer to applying for your visa, falls during Dashain and Tihar. Banks, government offices, and colleges can close for long periods, so get your NOC, bank statements, and transcripts sorted before the festival break rather than after it.
