Overview

Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) is a public technical university in Saxony, Germany, with academic strengths spanning engineering, computer science, natural sciences, economics and the humanities. Its research priorities include Smart Systems and Materials, energy-efficient production and Human Factors in Technology, supporting interdisciplinary work across technology and society. The university comprises eight faculties covering areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science, Economics and Business Administration, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Behavioural and Social Sciences. TU Chemnitz's International Office (IUZ) provides guidance before and after arrival, including support with enrolment, residence permits, registration and settling into life in Germany.

The university's Student Buddy Programme pairs new international students with experienced TU Chemnitz students, helping them navigate university procedures, orientation and everyday life.

An Orientation Week takes place before the semester and includes information sessions, campus and city activities, excursions and social events. In the StudyCheck Award 2025, TU Chemnitz was named the most popular university in Germany, receiving a 96% recommendation rate and 4.2/5 stars.

In the 2026 StudyCheck Awards, it placed fourth overall among German universities and second among public universities in its mid-sized category. Its position in StudyCheck's Digital Readiness ranking has also varied over time, reaching first place nationally in January 2026.

Accommodation

Student accommodation is available through Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau, with residences around areas including Reichenhainer Straße and Thüringer Weg. Studentenwerk currently offers around 1,885–1,945 rooms in Chemnitz.

For 2026, published all-inclusive rents range from approximately €264.50 to €344.50 per month, depending on the residence and room. A security deposit is also required. Students are advised to apply early because residences can reach full occupancy around the start of the semester.
