What Is the Russell Group of Universities?

The Russell Group is a self-selected association of 24 public research universities, formed in 1994 and named after the Hotel Russell in London, where its first meetings took place. Durham, Exeter, Queen Mary, and York were the most recent universities to join, in 2012.

Membership isn’t a ranking or an official government status. It signals that a university is research-intensive, with large research budgets, strong PhD programmes, and close links with industry.
