If you’re applying for 2027 entry, or deferred 2028 entry, you’ll need to sit the UCAT 2026, which runs between July and September 2026. This guide covers the current test format, the key dates and deadlines, and which universities require it.

The UCAT is used alongside secondary school exam performance and interviews, so a strong score can meaningfully improve your chances of an offer. Learn more about the UCAT below, and if you’d like support applying for a medicine or dentistry course in the UK, arrange a free consultation with StudyIn.

Contact StudyIn About Your Application

Why Does the UCAT Matter for Medicine and Dentistry Applications?

Demand for medicine and dentistry places in the UK is extremely high, so universities need a consistent way to compare applicants beyond secondary school grades alone. The UCAT was developed to assess qualities relevant to healthcare professions, such as problem-solving, judgement and the ability to work with complex information under time pressure.

Most UCAT universities also use interviews as part of their selection process, so a good UCAT score typically works alongside strong academics and interview performance rather than replacing either. Whatever your view on how well the test measures these qualities, sitting the UCAT is a prerequisite for the large majority of UK medicine and dentistry courses.

Top 10 UK Medical Colleges

What Is the Structure of the UCAT in 2026?

The UCAT is not based on a fixed curriculum. It assesses reasoning and judgement skills that are difficult to teach directly, which is why preparation focuses on technique and timed practice rather than memorising content.

Since 2025, the UCAT has consisted of four subtests rather than five, after Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn from the test. The current subtests are Verbal Reasoning, which assesses the critical evaluation of written information; Decision Making, which evaluates judgement using complex data; Quantitative Reasoning, which examines numerical problem-solving; and Situational Judgement, which tests understanding of real-world scenarios and appropriate professional behaviour.

How Is the UCAT Scored?

The standard test lasts just under two hours, including short instruction sections before each subtest. The UCAT is marked on the number of correct answers given, and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

UCAT Subtest

Questions

Test Time

Score

Verbal Reasoning

44

22 minutes

300 to 900

Decision Making

35

37 minutes

300 to 900

Quantitative Reasoning

36

26 minutes

300 to 900

Situational Judgement

69

26 minutes

Bands 1 to 4

Your Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning scores are added together to give a total cognitive score between 900 and 2,700. This subtest measures your ability to comprehend and draw conclusions from written passages. It consists of eleven passages, each followed by four questions asking you to select the most suitable response or judge whether a statement is true, false, or cannot be determined from the text.

Decision Making

Doctors and dentists often face complex situations that require problem-solving, risk assessment and managing uncertainty. This subtest evaluates your logical reasoning, including your ability to analyse arguments, interpret statistical information and make sound decisions. Questions may reference text, charts, tables or diagrams, and include syllogisms, logical puzzles, Venn diagrams and probabilistic reasoning. A simple on-screen calculator is available.

Quantitative Reasoning

Doctors and dentists frequently need to interpret and apply numerical data, from drug calculations based on patient factors to interpreting statistical results in clinical research. This subtest measures numerical problem-solving rather than raw arithmetic, assuming familiarity with numbers equivalent to a good GCSE pass. Most questions are grouped in sets connected to the same chart or dataset, with a basic on-screen calculator available.

Situational Judgement

This subtest measures your understanding of real-world situations and your ability to identify the critical factors and appropriate behaviour needed to deal with them. It assesses qualities such as integrity, perspective-taking, teamwork, resilience and adaptability. Questions present hypothetical scenarios in clinical or educational settings, asking you to rate the appropriateness of different responses or choose the most and least appropriate actions.

Best UK Dentistry Schools

What Are the Key UCAT 2026 Dates for 2027 Entry?

You’re required to sit the UCAT 2026 if you’re applying for 2027 entry, or deferred entry in 2028, to a UCAT Consortium university. The fee covers the cost of the test and access to official UCAT practice materials. A bursary scheme is available to help cover the test fee for eligible UK-domiciled candidates, though this doesn’t apply to international applicants testing from India.

Get Help Booking Your UCAT

Which UK Universities Require the UCAT for 2027 Entry?

Most UK medical and dental schools use the UCAT for admissions.
