Russell Group Universities: A Complete Guide for Bangladeshi Students
The Russell Group is a group of 24 leading research-intensive UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL. For Bangladeshi students, Russell Group universities offer globally recognised degrees, strong employer reputation and access to the UK Graduate Route after you finish.
This guide covers every member university, entry requirements for students from Bangladesh, the full cost in BDT, scholarships, English tests and what happens after you graduate.
What Is the Russell Group of UK Universities?
The Russell Group is a membership association of 24 UK universities with a shared focus on world-class research and high-quality teaching. It was founded in 1994 and takes its name from the Hotel Russell in London, where university leaders first met. It has had 24 members since 2012, when Durham, Exeter, Queen Mary University of London and York joined.
The Russell Group is not a ranking or an accreditation body. It represents its members’ shared interests to government and industry. Its universities attract around two-thirds of UK universities’ research grant and contract income, which is why so many of them lead in fields like engineering, data science, public health and business.
Is the Russell Group the Same as the Top UK Universities?
Not exactly. Most Russell Group universities rank highly, but some excellent UK universities are not members. The University of St Andrews and the University of Bath, for example, both place in the QS World University Rankings 2027 top 125 without belonging to the Russell Group. Bangladeshi students should compare courses and outcomes, not just the Russell Group label.

Why Do Bangladeshi Students Choose Russell Group Universities?
For Bangladeshi postgraduate students, the Russell Group is about outcomes as much as prestige. Here’s what makes these universities worth considering:
- One-year master’s degrees: Most UK taught master’s last 12 months, so you pay one year of tuition and living costs rather than two.
- Strong employer recognition in the UK, Bangladesh and internationally, particularly in finance, consulting, technology and engineering.
- Research-led teaching in Bangladesh’s highest-demand subjects, including Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Public Health, Business Analytics and Accounting and Finance.
- Access to the UK Graduate Route, which lets you stay and work after your degree.
- Established Bangladeshi communities in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester, which many families, especially in Sylhet, already have close ties to.
What Are the Russell Group Entry Requirements for Bangladeshi Students?
Entry requirements vary by university and course, but most Russell Group universities publish specific guidance for Bangladeshi qualifications. Here’s what to expect.
Postgraduate Entry Requirements From Bangladesh
- Bachelor’s degree: Many Russell Group universities typically ask for a CGPA of around 3.0 to 3.3 out of 4.0 from a recognised Bangladeshi university as a UK 2:1 equivalent. The most selective, such as Imperial, LSE, Oxford and Cambridge, usually expect higher.
- University recognition: Some Russell Group universities adjust requirements depending on which Bangladeshi university you graduated from, so the same CGPA may be treated differently.
- Statement of purpose: A personal statement is required for most master’s courses and matters more when your CGPA is close to the minimum.
- Work experience: Relevant experience strengthens your application and is often required for MBA and some management courses.
- Study gap: A gap after your bachelor’s is generally accepted if you can explain it, particularly with work experience.
Undergraduate Entry Requirements From Bangladesh
HSC results alone usually aren’t enough for direct entry to a Russell Group bachelor’s degree. National curriculum students typically complete an International Foundation Year first, often through a university pathway partner. English-medium students with strong A Level grades can apply directly through UCAS, which costs £34.50 per application.
For parents funding an undergraduate degree, the total is usually three years of tuition and living costs, so it’s worth planning scholarships and financial evidence early.
What English Test Do Bangladeshi Students Need for Russell Group Universities?
Most Russell Group universities accept IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. Requirements are higher for competitive courses and universities.
| English Option | Typical Russell Group Requirement | What Bangladeshi Students Should Know |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall (6.0 in each band), up to 7.0 or 7.5 | Widely accepted for all courses |
| PTE Academic | Around 62 to 69 overall, depending on course | Accepted by most, but check each university |
| Medium of Instruction (MOI) | Rarely accepted on its own | A few may consider it case by case; confirm first |
| Pre-sessional English | Offered by most members | Lets you start with a slightly lower score |
MOI (Medium of Instruction) is a letter confirming your previous degree was taught in English. While some UK universities accept it, Russell Group universities usually expect a recognised test score. Many Bangladeshi students need more than one attempt to reach their target score, so plan time for a retake or a pre-sessional course rather than treating it as a setback.
How Much Does It Cost to Study at a Russell Group University From Bangladesh?
For a one-year master’s, the full first-year commitment typically ranges from around ৳62 lakh outside London to ৳77 lakh in London. Tuition for international postgraduate students is typically around £22,000 to £40,000 per year, with some business, engineering and MBA programmes costing more. The table below shows an example budget.
| Cost (One-Year Master’s) | Outside London | London |
|---|---|---|
| Example tuition fee | £26,000 (approx. ৳42.4 lakh) | £32,000 (approx. ৳52.2 lakh) |
| Living costs to show (9 months) | £10,539 (approx. ৳17.2 lakh) | £13,761 (approx. ৳22.4 lakh) |
| Student visa fee | £558 (approx. ৳91,000) | £558 (approx. ৳91,000) |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | Approx. £1,164 (approx. ৳1.9 lakh) | Approx. £1,164 (approx. ৳1.9 lakh) |
| Estimated total | £38,261 (approx. ৳62.4 lakh) | £47,483 (approx. ৳77.4 lakh) |
BDT conversions are approximate, based on £1 = ৳163 in September 2026, and will change with exchange rates. You’ll also need to budget for your IELTS or PTE test, a TB test (required for UK visa applicants from Bangladesh) and flights.
- Tuition deposit: Most Russell Group universities ask for a deposit of around £2,000 to £5,000 after you accept your offer. This is deducted from your tuition fee.
- Part-time work: Degree-level students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time. At the UK National Living Wage of £12.71 per hour (from April 2026, for workers aged 21 and over), that’s up to around £254 a week, which can help with living costs but shouldn’t be relied on to pay tuition.
How Much Money Do I Need to Show for a UK Student Visa From Bangladesh?
You must show your unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs of £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. The money must be held in your account, or your parent’s account, for at least 28 consecutive days, and your bank statement must be dated within 31 days of your application.

Expert View
“For many of our Bangladeshi postgraduate students, the hardest part of a Russell Group application isn’t the CGPA, it’s the financial evidence. Move your funds into the account you’ll use at least two months before requesting your CAS, so the 28-day rule never becomes a last-minute problem.” – Sabrina Mahbub, Country Manager, StudyIn – Bangladesh.
Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students at Russell Group Universities
Scholarships can significantly reduce the cost of a Russell Group degree. Bangladeshi students can typically apply for:
- Chevening Scholarships: Fully funded UK government scholarships for one-year master’s, requiring at least two years of work experience.
- Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships: Fully funded awards for students from eligible Commonwealth countries, including Bangladesh.
- GREAT Scholarships: £10,000 towards tuition at participating UK universities, including some Russell Group members, for students from selected countries.
- University scholarships: Most Russell Group universities offer merit-based international awards, often worth £2,000 to £10,000 off tuition.
Fully funded scholarships are highly competitive, and eligibility changes each year. Check the latest criteria before applying and apply early, as deadlines can fall close to a year before your course starts.
How Do Bangladeshi Students Apply for a UK Student Visa?
Once you’ve accepted your Russell Group offer, the Student visa process typically follows these steps:
- Accept your offer and pay your tuition deposit.
- Receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university.
- Hold the required funds for 28 consecutive days and collect your bank statements.
- Complete a TB test at an approved clinic in Bangladesh.
- Apply online, pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, and book a biometrics appointment at a visa application centre.
- Wait for a decision. UKVI aims to decide most applications made outside the UK within three weeks.
Can your spouse come with you? Since January 2024, most international students on taught master’s courses can’t bring dependants. Dependants are generally only allowed if you’re studying a PhD or a research-based master’s. If your visa is refused, you can usually reapply with stronger documentation, and StudyIn can help you understand the reason for refusal before you do. See our UK Student visa guide for Bangladeshi students for full details.
What Happens After You Graduate From a Russell Group University?
After graduating, Bangladeshi students can apply for the UK Graduate Route, which lets you work or look for work without employer sponsorship. From 1st January 2027, the Graduate Route is reduced to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. Applications made on or before 31st December 2026 still receive two years, and PhD graduates receive three years.
If you find a role with a licensed employer that meets the salary and skill requirements, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa, which can eventually lead to settlement in the UK. Settlement rules are under review and qualifying periods may become longer, so no degree guarantees a job or permanent residence.
A Russell Group degree does, however, give you a strong starting point with employers in the UK and when returning to Bangladesh.
